About Christopher Lowell Clarke (trumpet)

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio Christopher Lowell Clarke began playing trumpet in elementary school. Excelling in his musical training, he was given an opportunity to attend the School for the Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) in Cincinnati. SCPA provided many musical experiences for Clarke including playing First Chair trumpet in the school’s symphony orchestra, symphonic band, and jazz band. Clarke also played in the productions of a number of musicals including Peter Pan, The Sound of Music, and Sophisticated Ladies.

In 1992 Clarke was awarded The Fisk Middleton Rising Young Jazz Artist Scholarship and attended The College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Majoring in jazz and studio music, Clarke played with guest artists Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Bobby Shew, Byron Stripling, and many others. And in 1994 Clarke was invited by Ronnie Wells, founder of both the Fisk Middleton Award and the East Coast Jazz Festival, to perform in her annual festival which is held in Washington, DC.

Hungry to play abroad, Clarke accepted a position with Carnival Cruise Lines to play in the MS Fantasy’s Universe Orchestra. After four years, ten ships, and numerous ports throughout the Pacific Northeast, Caribbean, and Mexico, Clarke ended his run with Carnival. He was also a member of The Johnny Nocturne Band during their 1997 tour of Italy where they played in numerous venues including the famous Umbria Jazz Festival in Orvieto.

Clarke’s next step brought him to the Bay Area, where his career has continued to flourish. He has performed in numerous jazz festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival, Stanford Jazz Festival, Mt. Hood Jazz Festival (now the Northwest Jazz Band Festival), and the Fillmore Jazz Festival (held annually on the streets of the Fillmore District in San Francisco, CA). Since his move to San Francisco Clarke has shared the stage with many Bay Area legends: Eddie Marshall, George Coleman, Sonny Simmons, and Bishop Norman Williams, to name a few. Clarke has performed at an array of local jazz establishments including Rasselas, Rose Pistola, Brunos, the Black Cat, Enricos, and Butterfly.

In 1997, while out on Fillmore St. trying to keep his chops up and hustle up a little cash, Christopher Lowell Clarke met Dewayne Oakley. Soon after, Clarke was invited to play at the Mocca, a sidewalk cafe on San Francisco’s Maiden Lane — and the two have been a team for the past twenty years appearing at weddings, house parties, office parties, corporate events, political rallies, concerts, radio interviews, and a host of long-running engagements including the Mocca, Ristorante Piacere (in San Carlos, CA), the Iron Horse Tavern on Maiden Lane, the Rose Pistola, the Black Cat, Rasselas.

Donald “Duck” Bailey was so impressed, he joined the team around 2007 and worked with Oakley and Clarke until a year before his passing away in 2013.

Oakland is currently the scene for Clarke and the Dewayne Oakley Blues Ensemble, with long-standing engagements at Small Wonder Cafe and Bar, Penrose, Federation Brewing, and the Jack London Square and Lakeshore Farmers Markets along with a long list of outdoor venues in the East Bay and beyond, through the farmers market chains: Urban Village, Pacific Coast, and the Agricultural Institute of Marin.

Clarke’s discography has also grown during his tenure with the Blues Ensemble. He is a featured artist on three CDs, and three more projects are forthcoming: The Dewayne Oakley Blues Ensemble Live at Small Wonder I & II, and Just Blue.
